This book was a wild ride. Jaron went through so much, and I wasn't sure if he was going to be okay. So did his group of friends. I really enjoyed this book and the reveals that it had. Also, I got to see more depth from the characters. There is one more book to go, and I'm not sure if I want it to end. I guess I'll have to finish it but I hope it will be as good as these books. Again, I recommend that if you like an adventure book.

For someone who has royal blood running in his veins Sage is one of the most pathetic monarchs ever. Don’t get me wrong, I love him, but really his life is like an endless marathon of getting kidnapped, maimed, injured, tortured, starved, beaten or all of the above. Really is in one of the sorriest state I’ve ever seen.

But the hUmOuR. It makes me laugh when he’s getting punched in the gut and chortle when he’s about to get beheaded the next minute and I’m LOVING it.

This is an announcement for all characters

Sage (because have a herb as your name sounds cooler than Jaron), buddy, have you ever considered applying for a career change as a stand-up comedian. It’s honestly a pity that people only understand half of your insults even though those comebacks hit hard and makes me want to give this book 5/5. You will forever be PERFECT and ILYSM YOURE THE LIVING HOPE OF THIS BOOK.

It’s just in his nature to divert the topic at the worst of times which makes me swoon and suspect that I have a fever because it has been a millennial since I have been impressed by any fantasy character. I thoroughly pity Lump (poor you) over the whole ‘revealing the plausibly highly embarrassing nature of your name is my purpose in life’ but it is sorta his fault for being all secretive about it. (At least we knew what it was in the end)

Darius dude you really have to get your priorities right. Judging from how he’s fared thus far I wouldn’t be surprised if Belladan (Belladon? Bella-something) was conquered tomorrow. His willpower and actual leadership skills are weaker than the ant I squashed yesterday and his king now? Darius in the whole ‘I’m King now’ equation does NOT bode well AT ALL (I wage a dollar he comes begging for help in the next instalment)

Roden I have nothing to say to you. Mostly because I have no idea what in the world you were doing in this book (I think at this point half of Sage’s injuries can like trace their histories back to you so). You better get your head in the game in the next book because I am watching you like a hawk and if you make me hate you more than Imogen I will never speak to you, look at you in the eye, or breathe the same air as you do again.

Tobias stop being a whimp and a chicken because Fink has more brawn than you do and it’s humiliating, really. I was willing to overlook the whole ‘I like rising above my station and falling in love with royalty when I have peasant blood and was just lucky to get pulled into all this and the only thing I have going for me is my rookie knowledge in stitching wounds’ trope but manz is so possessive that it’s getting on my nerves.

You need to CALM DOWN and admit that Araminda can take care of herself because she isn’t some helpless babe and acknowledge that it’s you who needs help because you can’t hold a knife if your life depended on it.

Wilma, honey, for someone whose middle name is ‘monarch’ and rules with an alleged iron fist I don’t even though how you haven’t been usurped yet. Your mood swings are also lowkey the creepiest things ever and this is exactly the reason why children shouldn’t be given the authority to make reckless and irrational decisions.

Let’s review a scene shall we:
Sage: I know you’re the Monarch
Wilma: Well I know your deepest darkest secrets and I’m going to make sure you regret leaving me in a hole which I strategised with my mum to go into in the first place and only after realised I lack any skills to scale a cliff
proceeds to fall down something and dangle off a dangerous edge
Wilma: help me Sage I’ll do anything for you
Sage: HELPS HER
Wilma: just you wait I’m going to get you; you’ll never be able to hide from me

As evidenced, Wilma definitely needs to see a psychiatrist.

Regardless of all the erratic character traits, this book was still a great read overall!! The plot was ehhh but at least there weren’t too many buffers and Sage is soon-to-be ranked higher than Nikolai Lantsov in terms of charm and wit (so you better watch out)

"If doing what’s right makes someone angry with me, then may I cause rage and fury wherever I go."
.

I read this book back in January and forgot to review it! This book is sooo good though!
If you've been following me for a while you might've picked up on how much I love the Ascendence Trilogy and I loved this continuation of the series! It's perfect if you're looking for your next fantasy read definitely pick up this series! It's squeaky clean and even though it's a middle grade it's as thrilling as any YA novel in my opinion!

Cleanliness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

❤️ What I loved:
- The puzzles/narrow escapes in this book! There were so many moments I really didn't know how Jaron was going to make it out but he did every time.
- I also loved that some of the side characters also had their own plans and Jaron had to learn to trust the people around him.
- The easy to follow writing and cliffhangers at the end of the chapters just left me wanting more!

3.7 definitely not as good as the original three but I’m chalking it up to the fact that it’s been six years since she wrote the last book. It was just too confusing.

This book was written 6 years after the original trilogy and still is an absolute bop. The characters and story hit so hard and I just truly love this series. I didn’t know what to expect and I got more than I could’ve wanted.

I'm torn, because this was a fun addition to the original trilogy, but one of the biggest plot twists made me not like it as much. I felt the original story had more impact before this twist happened. Can't get specific, because of spoilers, but yeah. I'll definitely still read the last one, but right now I'm feeling like this was an unnecessary addition, regardless of much I adore Jaron and his antics.
