What a wonderful little jewel of a book. As soon as I finished it I reached out to those I love most because of the beautiful lesson this book teaches.
In follows Nick as he navigates through a lonely time of his life where all he really does is work endlessly in a job that isn’t favored by many, and form meaningless relationships with people. His regular routine is interfered when he meets Wren, a doctor who helps him change his outlook of the world.

This was so so so cute, but honestly beyond that, it was so rewarding and immersive. The art and narrative work together flawlessly to create a space that makes the reader feel comfortable and especially, makes the reader feel welcomed. It’s beautiful and charming and so mundane which makes it even more spectacular. McPhail has a magical ability to utilize art for humor and love and humanity, which I thought was just so compelling. Loved this from start to finish, definitely worth reading multiple times.

Good artwork with an average story.
Was expecting a little more, story-wise as the book is meant for older audience.

I picked this graphic novel up because it was the ALA’s “2021 Best Graphic Novels for Adults Reading List.” From the reviews, it seems like “In.” is almost universally loved. However, it doesn’t do much for me.

The story: A self-centered man-child who speaks only in sarcasm feels unhappy and struggles with connecting with others. Then, he meets a girl and everything changes. He starts having “moments” with his mom, stepdad (?), nephew, etc. Then the story takes a tragic turn near the end.

The art: drawn mostly in black and white. Realistic looking characters but weird, super round eyes. In the moments when the protagonist has a “connection” with someone else, the art shifts into this colored, painted, wordless, hyper-realistic style.

The protagonist was so unlikeable that I struggled with this one. The shift from humorous, tongue-in-cheek tone to deadly serious tone felt . . . Forced? Jarring?
