Ayos ang plot.

Maganda 'yung flow at execution. Medyo predictable lang, pero na-enjoy ko pa rin 'yung mga twist. I was also expecting harder puzzles to solve gaya ng mga nabasa't napanood ko sa Detective Conan. Pero okay na rin.

Ayos 'yung mga characters. I loved them all dahil well-developed sila at mahilig ako sa childhood friendships.

Tapos 'yung ending ay satisfying hahaha.

This is a good book. Enjoyable. Nakaka-feel good.

Dahil sa book na 'to, lalo akong nabuwiset sa mga tsismosa. Hahaha

What did you aspire of becoming when you were young?

Detective Boys of Masangkay: Ang Mangkukulam is nostalgic, reminding us of our aspirations and it drives us to reminisce the memories of the loneliness, enjoyment, and innocence of childhood.

The story follows four young aspiring detectives as they unravel the mysteries shrouding their town one-by-one. Intriguing to say the least, each of the solved mystery showcases a wonderful moral that can and will be appreciated by not only the novel’s younger target audience, but also teens and adults alike. In addition, the characters each have their own personality that gives them that beautiful individuality. Hence, allowing readers to find someone to which they can resonate with.

An astonishing mirror of a child’s naïve and innocent mind, Detective Boys of Masangkay: Ang Mangkukulam is not just a good story, but also a beautiful lesson that teaches its readers compassion towards others. A truly delectable and poignant novel that everyone should definitely read.

I read this as an evening bedtime read-aloud for my kids to get them used to hearing Tagalog (one of the Philippine languages) and hopefully be able to grow their everyday, conversational vocabulary in this language.

We all really enjoyed this book! The language (Tagalog with some English thrown in) was relatable and very real and was a throwback to life in the 90s when kids had no gadgets and boredom was combatted with one's imagination. Sobrang sayang basahin. :) The environment described and the backstories were also very real and engaging that my kids and I found ourselves reacting out loud, making side comments, and even talking about the characters as if they were real people.

Overall, a really, really good book. 1 star deducted though for quite a number of editing mistakes (words written twice, usually) throughout the book but the story, the characters - definitely outstanding. :)

"Alam ni'yo, fan din ako ni Detective Conan. Bagay ako sa grupo ni'yo."
"Wala kaming paki."

Bought this book for my brother because the cover design looked awesome (judging books by their covers since 1995) and I was pleased to find the story as great as the illustrations. It was very nostalgic and humorous, and the main characters were truly likable. Overall, it was such an enjoyable read. Glad I took it off the shelf.

"Author Bernalyn Hapin Sastrillo claims to be a 90’s kid and that was definitely evident in this book that waxes nostalgic for all things 90’s. What I originally thought to be a young adult book was actually targeting old millennials such as myself, who may want to take a trip down memory lane.

Despite this, the book can still be kid-friendly because of the simple yet exciting mystery and relatable characters. The only question to ask now is if there will be another case for the Detective Boys to solve that will be published in a sequel. I’m sure I’m not the only one crossing her fingers."
