So I read this book in less than 24hours. I generally am reading 3-4 books at a time and switch around depending on my mood. So for a book to capture my attention to read it it that quick I have to give it 5 stars!
I’ve followed the author on TikTok for awhile and always wanted to read her books. She has great humor and a personality i vibe with. So I’m not shocked I loved her book.

There are some serious pacing issues in this book and not enough time spent on important points while wasting time on other things. Like when there was two weeks in a dungeon for a couple characters, it’s totally glossed over but then those characters are traumatized but it doesn’t feel like it. I will read the other books in this series and am excited to try Umbra King because I know she has spoken about improving her writing, but this one was just ok

The idea is really good. It gave off Dance with the Elf king vibes (a book I really enjoyed) and the Heroine is very competent skills wise. The writing is really off putting because it’s so simple. The only book that’s comparable would be twilight but even that was more elevated in terms of tone and sentence structure. All of the characters seemed like they were in their late teens instead of immortal. My hope is that as the writer progresses in skill the books will too.

The story is compelling but the execution is lacking. The writing is the epitome of telling instead of showing. This reads more like an outline or story board for a book.
It’s written in third person which, for romance, is not ideal as it is so impersonal. There are jumps in time interrupting the flow making it read like snippets of scenes. Often there is a gaping lack of information for some scenes; characters randomly show up out of nowhere. It reads like punching the accelerator, then hitting the breaks. There’s so much description—again telling instead of showing and characters all get skin, eye, hair color descriptions like reading off a grocery list.
I really wanted to like it and I do like the story. I think it has so much potential but it’s not entirely landing for me.

This book has such a good concept, but it needs major work. Events that should have been flushed out in entire chapters wrapped up and moved on in a single page. She only had chemistry with Henry in my opinion. It read more like a statement of events and didn’t take any time for conversation or world building.

This book is due to undergo major rewrites at the end of 2023 so I would recommend holding off reading it until the updates have been made!
