Some of the oddness of this story is unnecessarily jarring, but it is a lovely story.

This book made me feel all the feels! It is a hard hitter and actually quite sad, but in the way that life can be. It feels real- messy and complicated. Very gut wrenching, but beautiful. Everyone should read this book!

I read this in 5th grade, and I have loved it ever since. You really think of all the assumptions you make about people based on one thing or another.

This was a very well written book, deserving of the Newbery Award. I enjoyed the story within the story framework as the main character’s narration of her friend’s story was key to her eventual peace with the world. A handful of surprising twists near the end of the book added excitement to the already enjoyable story. This should be required reading in any upper elementary class as it is such a rich piece of literature that could be the start of some worthwhile discussion.

This book is amazing! I read it for school and I loved it! It has quality writing and the plot leaves you with enough info to know what’s going on but still leaves you with a sense of mystery, something I really like! The main character is relatable, and the characters are unique and not cliche. The author uses flashbacks to make a story that would otherwise be confusing make perfect sense. I would recommend it to middle school level readers.

While I'm torn about Creech penning an indigenous book while not being indigenous herself, the story is well done. I enjoyed the dual stories and timelines and how they complemented each other. Sal's journey across the United States to locate her mother is not unlike Phoebe's journey to understand hers. Both leave. One comes back, one does not. I appreciated how Sal told Phoebe's tale, how she wove in mystery, and how she described her friends and neighbors. Ultimately, Walk Two Moons is a story of self-discovery, but it is also a story of how we allow others into our lives, homes, and hearts, and how they become our family.
I just wish there was more. It feels like by the end we are seeing Sal and Phoebe's lives through a keyhole, and we are only allowed to observe so much. I want more about why Sal's mother left, and what she was feeling- I think a diary of hers would have added a much needed layer to the entire story. While it does feel as though it lacks depth, it is still a decent, quick read, and I know it will stay with me for awhile.

A richly-layered odyssey sometimes is not the way to go, as Walk Two Moons shows. It is a boring, egregiously-executed novel with unlikeable characters, a rather flimsy premise, and a girl, annoying in nature, with some weird Tree name.
