I heard so much about this book and I was really excited to finally read it. Unfortunately it is not my new favourite book like I thought it had the potential to be. It definitely had some lovely characters and character arcs and I think that it could have been meaningful for someone who Was experiencing grief like the main character was, but the general plot of the book was so very character focused that it often felt like there wasn’t very much conflict. If I had to describe the conflict of the book, I would just say that it was obvious there was going to be a sad parting at the end, but this wasn’t really enough for many of the scenes to have the high stakes that really would’ve invested me in the story.

throughout most of the book i felt so out of touch with the characters and i couldn’t fully empathise as the writing didn’t really fully flesh out the whole process of her going through this experience. personally, i’m very intrigued with how books deal with grief as i’ve read quite a select few and i have to say that although this wasn’t as good as i was expecting, i would definitely understand why it has left the impact that it’s had on people! it ended off really beautifully and i would understand why this would elicit so much emotion from the reader, but i, unfortunately, after having been out of touch with the story and characters, it didn’t impact me as much as i thought it would. however, there’s no doubt in me that there was so emotion poured out into those last chapters which really motivated me to keep reading this book.
Spoiler it was also surprising to me how this ended given that it’s a YA book and i’d expect it to end more on a happy note but i guess it’s part of why it has gained the attraction that it has from its audience and i respect that!
