I know this is supposed to be a meditation on guilt/the ills of alcoholism but it is kinda wild that Poe connected the abuse of animals as a trait for eventual killers and really nailed the narcissistic aspect of it.

what I can also tell you is I will be kissing my black cat on the forehead as penance for reading this with my own two eyes

The Black Cat: 4.5/5 very Tell-Tale Heart

The Oval Portrait: 5/5 very Portrait of Dorian Gray

“He did not see that she was growing weaker with every day. He never noticed that she was not healthy any more, and not happy any more. The change was happening in front of his eyes, but he did not see it.” <— families who deny the existence of chronic illness in loved ones also

Berenice 4/5
“I almost never left the house, and I left the library less and less. And so, slowly, the real world - life in the world outside these walls - began to seem like a dream to me. The wild ideas, the dreams inside my head were my real world. They were my whole life.” Introvert anthem

“Her bright young days ended when an illness - a terrible illness - came down on her like a sudden storm. I watched the dark cloud pass over her. I saw it change her body and mind completely. The cloud came and went, leaving someone I did not know. Who was this sad person I saw now? Where was my Berenice, the Berenice I once knew?” Lots of commentary on sickness and health in this one

Monomania sounds a LOT like some neurotransmitters going way out of whack. I gotta research this and see if there’s a more updated term for it in DSMV

The Mask of Red Death 4.3/5
Did Poe have a nightmare disorder or was he just Like That? He does SUCH a good job of creating that sense of being in a dream where everything is so real, but just wrong enough that it’s not quite the right reality. Terrible read for anyone with a messed up or tenuous relationship to reality, but fascinating as literature.
