3.5 stars. it’s a compelling story with a simple writing style that’s smooth & makes it an easy & quick read. the characters are intriguing & i’m excited to learn more about them in the upcoming books. the biggest downfall is that i love world building in fantasy books & this book has little to none of it. however i still thoroughly enjoyed it. not my favorite but still a solid ya fantasy!

I reread this book via Audio and it was so good!
I absolutely love the narrators (Steve West + Fiona Hardingham) and I really love this story.
Looking forward to finishing the series this year!!

listened to the audiobook for my reread. it was still good, but my rating has changed to 3.75 stars.

Update: there'll be a sequel. So 4.75 stars it is.
---
4.25 stars, if this stays a stand-alone. 4.75 stars, if there comes a sequel.

I feel like there are too many questions unanswered and it needs a sequel. If this was the first book in a series, it would have a great ending, but for a stand-alone I find it too open.

I loved the storyline didn't love the main characters. I guess we'll see how the next book makes me feel.

EDIT: 4/28/17I was on the if-ie side when I finished whether or not I was going to continue to read this series but after finding myself thinking about the characters and the story line so much I know I HAVE to read the next book. Because of this fact I'm changing my rating to four stars.

I have seen an Ember in the Ashes all over tiktok. I got a copy of it for Christmas and decided to give it a chance!

Laia and her family don't challenge the empire, because they know first hand what happens to those who do. But when Laia's brother is arrested for treason, she is forced to make a decision. In order to save him, she must team up withthe resistance. Laia finds herself risking her life to spy on the world's greatest military academy. There she meets Elias- the best and most unwillingly soldier. They have more in common than they could have ever thought.

I enjoyed this book. I found it to be fast paced, and the multiple POV's were very well done. It was a seemless shift from one POV to another.

There was more violence in this book than I was expecting. The casual cruelty of tyranny was really showcased. The ease of which people commit violence against those disempowered was clear.

I really like the small supernatural elements of this book. I really look forward to them playing a bigger part!
