A brilliantly written book, interesting ideas, well-developed fantasy world(even though we just see glimpses of it). The only flaw I can spot it is hardly very diverse, with a grand total of three named female characters, not a single person of colour(as far as I could tell), no trans representation, and the only references to homosexuality treat it very poorly indeed(granted, this is accurate for the beliefs of straight Christians in the 1600s, but that's no excuse for the otherworldly Holekhor). Pretty major problem, but it was 2004, and he's a straight white dude. The storytelling itself was wonderful.
