This story is both inspiring and depressing. Depressing because, I feel, we have not come far enough as women. We need for Elizabeth Zott’s in our world

I think this was a good book and I was riveted at all of the plot twists, but it ultimately made me roll my eyes a lot. I loved the message of feminism and the struggles that women went through to get us where we are today, but it felt like it was pandering to the white feminism movement. However! I loved the story a lot, just thought it was a bit contrived.

it's like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo but even better imo. i fell in love with Elizabeth Zott, whose experiences are painful to read and made me want to scream with indignation. in fact, (almost*) the whole cast was lovable—not just  "able to be loved", but rather, "no choice but to love". an engaging, many-threaded story full of heart that weaved into one for a rock-solid ending (for which i'm a sucker).

*except, to be honest, Walter Pine. i don't see how he was much better than the villainous men before him (Donatti and Lebensmal); maybe he was "just following orders", but as if that makes up for it. he's a devoted father, but what kind of daughter's role model is complicit in the mistreatment of women under his own purview? but of course he's ultimately
Spoilerrewarded with a promotion—which i don't fault the writing for, it's prob the most realistic course of events unfortunately—but less believably, becomes bffs with Elizabeth at the drop of a hat
?? he may recognize the err of his ways, but did he follow that up with any significant changes, e.g. use his newfound power to uplift those he previously kept down? not that we know of. maybe i hold a grudge like Calvin but i don't really see how Walter redeemed himself.

I've been emotionally slapped. this book, while dealing with grief, traumatic experiences, and misogyny in science, is also extremely hopeful and so full of love (4.65)

Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott as she competes with the misogynistic world of 1950s America. A startlingly intelligent chemist who has faced irrevocable loss in her personal and professional life, Zott is thrust into the limelight when a local cooking show leads to her becoming the unlikely feminist hero her viewers need.

This book came to me EXTREMELY hyped up. Multiple booksellers at my old job told me it was one of their favourite books of last year so I was expecting something really special. In honesty, it kind of missed the mark for me. It was definitely unique it its style and I love hearing stories that don't often get told, but the writing and pacing were not my cup of tea. I felt like it was just trying a little hard to be quirky and I would have loved more character work because I found Elizabeth to be so outlandish she was hard to connect to.

I am clearly in the minority to not adore this one, but that's a risk we all take when delving into popular books!

Content warnings: contains depictions of attempted sexual assault and completion of suicide.
