Really is just a display of fibre craft virtuosity (and not particularly attractive same, IMHO), which is fine, but not as a children's book.

This may be Annie's favorite board book. She has read this countless times, mostly in the car, spending many minutes on each page. I'm not a dePaola fan in general, but I really like this one.

Allegedly written by Sarah Josepha Hale (an intriguing history of the rhyme is presented by dePaola at the back), dePaola places his version within a New England landscape. Having presented us with the music and words at the start, the narrative is broken down in this picturebook sometimes with wordless spreads and at other times spreads accompanied by lines from the nursery rhyme. The book reminded me of [b:Snow|22593389|Snow|Walter de la Mare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1403832016l/22593389._SX50_.jpg|42074699] which was part of an MA project. I wonder if the same can be said of Tomie's inspiration here.

Traditional tale accompanied by pretty paintings. Brief biography of Hale. Endnote includes brief information on the controversy regarding authorship of this tale; references.
