This book was just disappointing. It's one of those cases where the premise seems so good, but the author's writing and plotting abilities are just not up to par with it. I'm tempted to say it seems rushed, but that's not quite it. It's more like the author wasn't able to put that much depth into it.

The main character lives a life of isolation. The psychological implications of this are touched upon, but not really developed. And when it ends, it seems like it has no real effect on her. There are also a lot of characters on the periphery of the main characters story, that all end up being connected in a pretty constructed and unbelievable way.

The effects of the war on people are also kind of underplayed. All the serious topics in this book are undermined by a lack of depth and effect, and the forced interconnectedness of all the otherwise unrelated characters are reducing this to more of a cozy, lighthearted (and ultimately inconsequential) read than what I think was intended.

Honestly I’d have rated this higher but there were way too many characters to keep track of and I couldn’t really make sense of the narrative ? Three stars for the very beautiful writing, however

Até a luz me é estranha.

Nenhuma será a palavra adequada.

*******

Deus pesa as almas numa balança.
