After years of my brother bugging me constantly to read a Michael Connelly novel, I finally gave in - though he did want me to read the first in the Harry Bosch series instead! I quite enjoyed this one, although I was not quite prepared for the subject matter - I found myself a little bothered by some of the details in the novel, which surprised me, as I do read a lot of murder mysteries!

Jack became more interesting as the story went on, which was a good thing, because I found him a little bland to begin with. I wasn't quite prepared for the final plot twist - I thought I had it figured out for sure until the scene in the safehouse and I was pleasantly surprised! It looks as though I will be trying another of Connelly's works, especially
Spoilersince The Poet returns in a later Bosch novel

It was great the first time and just as good the second time around.

Was great to return to Connelly after a long time. The Poet was remarkably different from the Bosch books, yet, familiar all the same, and was oddly welcoming towards the end, when the plot takes us to LA. McEvoy not being a cop feels very restricted and powerless, however. Yet, he still manages to pull some impressive tricks.

There were some things left unanswered that would have bumped up my rating if they had been answered.  Overall, a pretty good read.

This book is a masterpiece! Just when you think you understand what is happening and what will happen, guess again!

“There is a means to every end. A root to any cause. Sometimes the root is more evil than any cause, though it's the cause that is usually most vilified.”

Until the end, that I won't spoil for you, I enjoyed the story. It was plausible, well-paced, and I really liked the characters.

I can't decide whether I'm upset, or not. The ALMOST Deus Ex Machina-esque finalé was just probable enough to offer the benefit of the doubt. Also, I'm struggling to discover how I would have ended the story had I been holding the pen. For these reasons I cannot impune the author ... at all.
