I fell in love with the layout of this book. It looks like a scrapbook — handwritten notes that appear to be taped next to snapshots and feathers, all collected and arranged lovingly and artistically across the pages. Not only did it go into the difference between feather (down vs. flight feathers, etc.), but it also discussed the different uses for feathers (did you know that some birds use their feathers to sweep dirt out of the nests that they dig in the ground?) My son left our reading of this book wanting to start his own feather collection!

Gorgeous illustrations. This would work well with the Mama Built a Little Nest showing the wide variety there is between birds. Just enough information for young readers.

Loved this book. Loved the simple text that leads into the more in-depth information. Loved that that part is "written" on a notebook piece of paper. Loved the analogies so children can connect the function to their world. Loved how in the back of the book, Stewart talks about how she uses 3 sources - materials from the library, the internet and her own field journals. Loved this book!

Engagingly informative. The authors note at the end is going to be my focus inspiration for my students' research papers.

I read this as research for nonfiction picture book writers. As a bird enthusiast, I learned some new things about feathers’ functions, and I appreciated seeing all of the beautifully illustrated feathers. The spare main text paired well with the more detailed side bar info. I liked the conceit of each feather being compared to an everyday object.
