Thoughtful and somewhat philosophical book about language and communication, as seen by an unhappy translator at the World Court. Doesn't get much of anywhere, expected twisteroo ending never showed up.

A lovely melancholy rainy summer day cry in bed with tea book and then go immediately make cinnamon rolls and watch a funny movie.

it did not work for me. the first person felt limiting and by the end of the book i felt like i couldn’t really describe any character’s personality traits or motivations for anything, not even the protagonist. the observations on issues like gentrification or sexism felt obvious (also all the glamorous or sexual women in the story were treated with scorn - whether by the narrator or by the author, it’s hard to say). the narrator wasn’t reliable in her observations of others but her unreliability wasn’t interesting, it only felt limiting to me. it felt like the entire story, and the interiority of all the characters - including the main character whose monologue i’d been listening to the whole time - was still unknown at the end of the book. that being said it was the first book i’ve finished in a while so i guess there must have been something i liked about it. the goodreads description contains more emotion than i found in the entire book though. i just wish i felt something reading it
