Between the beautiful Edward Cullens and the sexy Salvatore brothers of today's young adult literature, it's easy to see why teenage girls think they're doing something wrong when all they get is Rob with the mullet who likes to fart and swear in the classroom. That's what I like so much about this book... it's not a story of beautiful, unrealistic people or the abnormally brave and self-sacrificing. This is the most honest depiction of school, boys and family for a teenager that I have ever read.

The description promised something that I have read a million times over, the good old high school novel about guy troubles with a bit of homelife worries thrown in. But Melina Marchetta takes a simple, exhausted idea and uses her excellent writing and multi-faceted characters to create something unique, entertaining and completely moving. I wouldn't have bothered with this book if it hadn't been for Tatiana's recommendation and I am now extremely glad for it. This is the first Melina Marchetta book I've read and it definitely won't be the last.

I'm such a sob.. I actually teared up towards the end but couldn't all out cry as I was at a public pool.. THANK GOD FOR THAT. I'm 22. Why do I still relate to teenage characters, that is just wrong! For all those real teenage girls, I recommend this book, and for my felow 20,30,40, etc. year olds who still think theyre 17 please read it. It's sweet and light. Each and every one of us was Francesca at some point in her life, lost, confused, self loathing and doesn't fit in. What really grabbed me in the book was the very real portrayal of her relationship with her father. I don't want to spoil anything, but the climax of the story was very realistic and touching, and honestly, anyone whose had vicious fights with their loved ones, and ofcourse that's everyone, would get teary eyed at the resolution, IT's NOT JUST ME!

It was a slow start in the beginning, but the second half did not disappoint. It discussed very real mental health issues amongst adults and teenagers. I would love to read more of Melina Marchetta's works.

I’ve read this book at age 16, 18, and now 23 and I love it just as much as I did when I first found it. It’s about friendship and family and finding yourself and being funny and loving womanhood. The romantic part is the least important part of it. If you have ever been a teenage girl I think this book will find its place near your heart. If I’m wrong please never tell me!!!!!!

Great young adult fiction, but you would expect it after her first brilliant novel. Loved the characters and the story.
