The overall takeaway from the book was positive, however the road to get to that conclusion was riddled with layers of traumatic events. Some moments were incredibly hard for me to read through. Had I known how explicit some descriptions would be I wouldn’t have chosen to read this book, as I am a highly sensitive person.

This book is deceptively good. It tells the story of pain, loss and redemption across generations with humor and grace.

I found myself really invested in this book, in fact the day I finished I read over 200 pages in one sitting (something I do rather often but not necessarily for books of this size). That being said, this book was almost unnecessarily long and I often felt myself wishing that Nathan Hill had cut some details or sections out. That being said, many of the sections were really really important to the end so I understand why he wrote them. However, it took me so long to read this book and many times I was ready to take a break and finish a different book because it was taking me so long, in a way that made me frustrated considering I picked it up every day and thoroughly enjoyed the 80 or so pages I read every time.
