i grew up and live in brisbane and the way diana reid writes is so familiar and relatable. she could write the most mundane novel but as long as it’s set in australia, i’ll eat it up. i chewed through this book and found the story way better than her other novel “seeing other people”

I was really not vibing with the start of this book, but it because it was super easy to read, I just kept going and before I knew it, I was very invested in the story. I liked the character arcs we saw and where the plot went

Eh. It just felt very ‘high school’. The romanticising of the teacher/student relationship was a bit ick. There were so many good themes presented but the exploration of them was so superficial. I just think I wasn’t the target audience, despite being a university student myself.

If someone ever asks me what it’s like living on a uni campus in Australia I will give them this book and tell them to make a decision based on that. Whether they see the fun and light of the party culture or the dark and unethical parts of it is up to them. This book hit so so close to home and I was absorbed by the story

I initially picked up this book because I was thrilled to see it was set in Australia, and I am so happy I took the time to read it. This was a challenging read for me because of the dark subject matter, but beautifully written. It's a really interesting exploration of university friendships, the lessons people take from these formative years, and the issues in society that don't have an easy fix.

Do you like reading complex, intimate, witty, intelligent stories about consent and power and morality and the cultures of the colleges at The University of Sydney? Read this regardless of your answer.

It's also surreal to read about usyd, but about MY usyd, and about where in feminist space-time the campus was when I was there. Also wild to read a book set in the suburb I live in.

I really need to emphasise just how nuanced and precise and cutting and bright this book is, though. An absolute must read, 10/10 for me.
