Beautifully written, this book dives down deep into the bonds of sisterhood, the desire for justice and freedom and the pull of love.

Lucha is this fantastically strong protagonist with an incredible amount of love in her heart. When her mother is lost to a drug called Olvido and leaves her and her sister with nowhere to turn, the two are taken by an evil ex childhood friend of Lucha’s, as a demonstration of his power…

While imprisoned, Lucha strikes a bargain with an old god. Now, she finds herself on a quest through the Forest with her ill sister and the beautiful girl she won’t allow herself to have.

This book is filled with magic. There is such a beautiful darkness in this story, though I wish that we got a little more than just Lucha’s perspective.

Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace for a dystopian fantasy or I just had high expectations going in, but it felt like too much story was being packed into this one novel at the cost of developing characters or any of the story lines. Several elements intrigued me, but at many climactic points I was left surprised by how we got there and then quickly left. I might try this again later, but I definitely want to read more by this author!

This a a fantastic epic fantasy!! I was hooked from the first page. The character arc of Lucha is top notch. It reminds me of This Poison Heart in all the best ways. The action based plot kept me on the edge of my seat wanting Lucha to make the right choices.

In a world ruled by corruption, greed, and drugs that let people forget anything that is causing them grief. Lucha just wants to save her sister no matter what it takes even if that means making a deal with El Sediento the master of death who’s suppose to be just legend. This journey through that defines that destiny is just the culmination of the choices a person they make.

3.75 - this was rich and intricate and spooky and magical and gritty and sad, and I liked it a lot! The mythology and imagery and badass fmc energy were wonderful. This is a great sapphic, latinx-written spooky season read.

That said, there were also some weak points. Certain parts of it were overwritten — but the book was really almost poetry, so this made sense that at points it veered over. I also kind of wanted some more complexity in the villain, a bit more of a sympathetic side to make it less cut and dry. Last, the romance didn’t have much time to develop and the place it landed felt too serious for the connection we saw only beginning to grow.
