Once I started this I couldn’t put it down until I I finished it. It is very 90s and reminiscent of the times. There is no way the author would get away with referring to women as “string bikinis” today. I ignored it knowing that was how it was at the time and just enjoyed it for what it was which is a law/white collar crime thriller.
Graphic: Racism, Sexism, and Murder

This is the second John Grisham book I’ve ever read and I just don’t think he’s for me. I don’t like his writing style and it always takes me a minute to get into his books. However, I cannot deny that he is a masterful storyteller. The way he paints the story with such intricacies is to be admired! I’m glad I read this book, it is truly a classic and a wild ride.

For a reading challenge, I had to read a book published the year I was born. I was born in 1991 and the two biggest books of that year were OUTLANDER (which I’ve already read) and this John Grisham classic (which I hadn’t).
In a way I’m glad I picked this, because it might just be the most 90s book to ever exist. In some ways this was fun - espionage and surveillance before the internet and cell phones! A lawyer swayed to misdeeds by a mere $80k salary! In other ways this was rough - so much casual racism, sexism, and fatphobia.
The last line alone reminded me why I tend to hate straight, white, male authors. I couldn’t have rolled my eyes harder if I tried.
Moderate: Fatphobia, Racism, and Sexism
