Not a bad book at all. I found it to be a very cool modern interpretation of Cinderella. The thing that bugged me about this book was that there was no villain. Everyone was trying their best to do their best. There were some interesting dilemmas here and there but there was never one person who did anything evil or ill-spirited. Overall good book.

Ok so I didn’t absolutely hate how this book ended. However there were some glaring issues.

  1. Afi was portrayed to be a not so naive girl from a small Ghanaian town but I feel like she was way more naive than novel originally made her out to be.
  2. Muna was portrayed as this evil ugly, homewrecking troll by Elis family simply because the totalitarian like matriarch of this family didn’t approve of her.
  3. Afi ate this up, never questioning the family’s perception of Muna until actually seeing her for herself and even in that her first “revelation” about Muna was “she’s not ugly” Only a light skinned woman would fall for the ugly uncooperative dark skin woman troupe.
  4. Her character development was all over the place, my favorite parts were when she decided to learn how to drive, built her mom a house, and opened her boutique but at no point did her development include thinking about Muna’s feelings in this shitty situation and how they were both getting the short end of the stick from the entire Ganyo family.
  5. At one point Afi is furious at Eli for referring to their marriage as an “arrangement” but is that not what it was from the beginning? You only agreed to this “marriage” to help yourself and your family out financially, which no judgement but you falling in love with dude when you are essentially coming in as the other woman is not really Eli’s problem 🤷🏿‍♀️ And at no point did she ever really aknowledge that she in reality WAS the other woman.
  6. The “romance” aspect of this story was complete bullshit. We got 3 pages of insight into Eli and Muna and it was clear even from the little we got that they had more chemistry than Afi and Eli. She was just infatuated with this rich handsome man and his nice things. Which I get, money is nice yoh, but not love.
  7. This book exemplifies everything I hate about the girl boss feminism that mass media tries to shove down Black women’s throats. The author painted Afi as this character fighting against the patriarchy through individualism and capitalism that prioritizes individual success at the expense of other women.

Interesting, but I think I wanted more. I  wanted it to hit a little harder.

Also, why was Abraham there? What was the point of him getting a name and being seen twice?

This book is well written and is based on a really cool concept, but it also feels like nothing really happened in the entire book. Had a lot of potential but it just didn’t do much for me

It was definitely a page turner but felt a bit anti-climatic with all that tension build-up.

Basically everyone is silly, but I’m glad Afi stood up for herself.
