There was some very good detailed information here about the genre in general and the specifics of its origin. As others have mentioned, it seems like this book might have been birthed from a thesis except it doesn't really do the job of creating new insight. The book tried to serve as both a fan survey and a work of criticism- in doing so it did not do either particularly well. All in all a good work with some great background on the Sword and Sorcery genre but it could have used a little more editorial direction.

A great book to remind any reader of Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery of the many reasons to love this genre, as well as its inherent richness and complexities.
