Plot and characters are pretty flat, everything seems like a vehicle for the sex scenes

I actually really enjoyed this I think the world is really cool and the way the characters are written there's actually alot of depth to them and I ended up liking alot of them. I will say the pacing was kinda weird and confusing in some bits but it was still good.

✅ Finished Dec 20, ‘22

Not sure how a book about gods ended up boring, but it was. The first half was slow and uneventful. I managed to finish it so I had to rate it 2 stars nonetheless.

This had so many awful stereotypes about Persephone that reminded me of Lore Olympus.

1. Persephone is a young, sheltered, naive, maiden with no powers. Oh, and a virgin (to the delight of Hades).
2. Demeter is the over-bearing, abusive, controlling mother who stalks her daughter.
3. Hades is the rich and elusive club owner who is misunderstood. He can do no wrong and is actually a nice guy and tries to help mortals. He also doesn’t want anyone to know.

The story is told in a modern way, Persephone gets an internship at a newspaper office and decides to write about Hades, despite his wishes to the contrary and everyone’s warnings against it. She ends up losing a bet with him and ends up contracted with him for six months and must “make life” in the Underworld or else be stuck down there forever.

She basically does whatever she wants this entire book and suffers no consequences whatsoever.
At the end she finally stands up to her mother and finds her power, thanks to Hades, and decides to live with him anyways.

No real substance to the characters and the story was flimsy at best.

Wouldn’t recommend as a retelling to the Hades+Persephone.

“‘Let me worship you’, he said. His request felt sinful and devious, and she reveled in it. She answered, ‘Yes’.”

A modern-day retelling of the Hades and Persophone myth which starts off with Persophone studying journalism, relishing in her newly-won freedom. When her friend convinces her to join her at Hades’ exclusive nightclub, Nevernight, Persephone unknowingly falls into a bargain with the god of the underworld.

This book was a bit of a strange one for me. Initially, the writing made it feel quite young, which didn’t really match up with what I knew of it, but I persevered, eager to know more about Persophone’s pursuit to free herself from Demeter. Queue Hades and, oh my goodness, was this SPICY! The mood changed immediately and although it suddenly felt more grown up, I still found it a little jarring. I enjoyed the sexual tension, but felt as though the chemistry between these two purely came down to sexual desire. I’m hoping as the series continues, that we see a growth in their relationship and more of an emotional connection.

I did enjoy seeing Persophone go from naive and timid to a fiercer character as she grew into herself a little more. Although I didn’t feel that the prose was necessarily strong, I was still gripped by the story and, yes, the smutty scenes, and enjoyed this read.

This book was fun for a quick read. I’ll probably read the follow up books. It’s not amazing, but engaging enough. The sex scenes do get a bit repetitive and the pacing goes a bit too quick at times.
