Started off real strong, lost me a bit halfway, but found me again in the end. Absolutely love a strong female lead who is a bit broken and shows no mercy. Definitely regret letting this book sit my TBR for months before actually reading it. Idk how to wait for book 2 since I’m literally crying with the ending.

Abandoning at 46%.
This book has all the things and I'm finding it hard to follow. It's like 13 hours long and I'm about halfway through. I can't imagine listening to almost 7 more hours.
I think this suffers from debut novel syndrome: she stuffed everything in there. Plus I have a hard time reading fantasy. Just not clicking.
Love all things reaper though.

Wow, The Keeper of Night by Kylie Lee Baker was such a creepy thrill ride! I never thought I'd be so fascinated by creatures of Death. Baker created new worlds that were entirely believable despite their fantastical nature.

We are introduced to Ren Scarborough, a half English Reaper and half Japanese Shinigami. She's been collecting souls in London for centuries, but she has never really fit in. The other Reapers, including her own father, have never accepted the Shinigami side of her. No one except for her half brother, Neven.

After a situation where Ren lost control of her Shinigami powers with a fellow Reaper, she decides to escape to Japan to find her mother and finally fit in. Neven won't let her go alone, so they both leave for Japan while trying to avoid capture by Reapers. When they finally reach Japan, they meet mysterious Hiro who isn't exactly a Shinigami, but he can help Ren find a way to be accepted by the Japanese Goddess of Death.

However, Ren finds that she doesn't belong in Japan either, but she is determined to prove herself worthy. We go on a journey as Ren discovers more about herself, her brother, and exactly how far she will go to fit in. She has to figure out what is really important.

I can't wait to get this for my library. I have so many students who are interested in stories that are dark, creepy, and kind-of twisted...but in a really great way!

The concept of this book was very interesting, but the execution was not. I found this book to be a struggle to get through as it simply wasn’t as engaging as I was hoping for.

I’m not sure if I’ll read the second book, since I’m not sure it can bounce back how I felt about the story.

Loved the Japanese mythology/folklore, and I liked that it was pretty dark. The mc is half British, half Japanese, and we see her struggle with being from/between two cultures and never being good enough for either, which I think is an important subject.

I started out really liking this book, but as it progressed I found myself disliking Ren more and more. I was totally on her side in the beginning, and was rooting for her to go batshit, but when she did it was in a very unlikeable way imo. (And it's not bc she's morally grey, I love morally grey characters, but they have to be likeable while being bad people, you know?)

She also had some childish ways of (not) dealing with her emotions, despite having been alive for 200 years, and it wasn't my cup of tea. For example being angry that her brother doesn't understand her, despite never even trying to explain her thoughts and feelings to him.

Tw: death, murder, bullying, ableism, racism
