Another solid re-read. In Crown of Midnight, Sarah J Maas focused a little more on romance but also didn't pull any punches when it came to the rebellion, politics, and the air of mystery surrounding the plot in general.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

As much as I love this book and understand the reasoning behind it, I will never, never, EVER forgive Sarah for what she did to Nehemia. I know why it had to happen, but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

Overall, I think I enjoyed Crown of Midnight just as much this time as I did the first time, even though I was dreading rereading the events of that cursed night.

Hoooo boy, if ToG was the warm up, Crown of Midnight is where things break out to a full sprint. The central conflict is revealed, the story takes a turn. Relationships are built and broken.

Shit went DOWN. So much lovingly crafted character building, story revelations. I love how this book is paced. Once I got about halfway through, I couldn't put it down anymore. I cannot wait to see how this continues in Heir of Fire.

I feel like the twist was very obvious from the beginning but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The plot was so good but the romance in this book stops me to give it a higher ranking. It was not as bad as I remembered it being but
it still icks me that she changed her love interest out of nothing. I felt no chemistry in any of the first two books.

So I initially went into this highly sceptical and doubtful that I'd find any redeeming qualities to make me OBSESSED with this series, as I see so many people are... and while I am not obsessed and still think past me was slightly crazy and delusional...this book was definitely better than book 1!

I don't abore Celaena Lillian Elentiya Aelin or whatever the crap her name is but I don't hate her as much as I did in book 1. I liked this more as she wasn't as infuriating as in book 1 since she seemed to grow up. She wasn't obsessed with her clothing and looks, or not being invited to events. I guess being called a "coward" by your friend for not serving the greater cause can do that to you. She turns quiet ruthless when certain events occur in the book.

While I don't really like love triangles this one was....actually no... I still hate love triangles. The unnecessary angst - to me, it still feels like such a cop-out "not like the other girls" YA trope that seems too easy to do...I prefer Dorian to Chaol and I cannot wait for when Shadow Daddy becomes a full-fledged Shadow Daddy!

The writing (annoying Celaena aside) is excellent, there is something about the world-building and general writing of SJM that can suck you in and lull you. It's very well written and the main reason I am continuing on my listening journey. The plot starts to pick up in this as there has been more time to develop the world and things start falling into place. A few mysteries are solved as we finally learn how everything that has been happening is tied together. But we are still presented with numerous twists and turns and a cliffhanger.

Overall still confused as to why I needed to have read 2 books to start being hooked on a series but I can feel that this little fishy is almost falling for the bait of Throne of Glass's Fantasy World...

Your Tropes:
▶ Love Triangle
▶ Hidden Identity
▶ Unexpected Twists and Turns
▶ Unique Magic System and Intricate World Building
▶ Who did this to you (kinda)

This was a really solid middle book of a series, it progressed the plot in a way that was important to the series overall and had its own contained plot line as well as some interesting plot twists going along. My one complaint is that the romance plot has been getting a bit repetitive as the series goes on but everything else is great. I love the world and the main character.

The way I devoured this book. Sarah J Maas truly has an addictive writing style, characters who are beautifully complex, plot twists that make you gasp and book endings that make you want more.
