The plot of this book is amazing….The descriptions regarding people? Not my cup of tea😅 Truly a great plot combining multiple different paranormal/supernatural things in a fun way!
Graphic: Toxic relationship, Gore, Death, Blood, Alcohol, Murder, and Violence
Moderate: Body horror, Fatphobia, Gun violence, Animal death, Injury/Injury detail, and Suicidal thoughts

Not bad, not bad at all. In the vein of Christopher Moore. Funny "horror". I'll definitely be trying another of Martinez's books.

It was a fun summer read. I have really enjoyed all the Martinez books I've read. He does a great job of doing genre fiction mashed into sci-fi and fantasy contexts.

This is a great book. An enjoyable/easy read. It's about a vampire and a werewolf what try to save a diner from supernatural powers including zombies and undead cows. I enjoyed the author's spin on vampire and werewolf lore.

2.5. This definitely isn’t my usual kind of thing. After Dread Nation it was almost a bit too camp-horror for me to appreciate, a little too genre savvy, a bit too much of a send-up of old Westerns with a touch of eldritch. It reminded me of — this is not meant to be an insult, I swear — some of the more monstery Goosebumps books, or Buffy. There was the same silliness.
It was well written, but I think someone more familiar with horror movies might have found more to appreciate in this. Of course, I understood all the horror tropes, but to me it was a bit like reading Rincewind books without having read enough high fantasy to appreciate what Pratchett’s sending up.
The zombie cows were my favourite part, and the ghost trapped inside the Magic 8 ball.
I wish he hadn’t made the only Asian character the villain, though. And the weird seductress/child/Asian woman archetype just rubbed me the wrong way. It felt very menwritingwomen.

This possibly ranks a little over 3 stars for me. While I do acknowledge that I have seen the reasons why other people haven't liked this book, I find it entertaining nonetheless. The first thing that caught my attention was the unlikely pair of Duke the werewolf and Earl the vampire. They are unlike their literary counterparts (the little I've read of them, but I think you get the idea). This is kind of what happens when you get two average Joes, each of a different situation, and put them together. They're not best friends in the strict sense of the idea. Rather, each is the only friend of the other, and they drive around the country because what else are they going to do. Characters are as developed as they need to be, without a whole lot of extra unnecessary stuff thrown in. As I was reading this, I was a little reminded of Neil Gaiman. Perhaps he wouldn't appreciate the connection, but my friend steered me to this author knowing that I love the Neil Gaiman books that I've read, and she's also fond of this author.
Overall, this was a good, short, fantasy read. It was funny more than not, but not in an LOL way. I'll no doubt read more from this author.

Going into this Comedy/Horror book I wasn't sure I would like it but as soon as the audio book started & the southern accents began I couldn't help it, I liked it already. This book is quirky. The characters funny but there's a lot of bad language so if you hate bad language, this book is not for you. Overall I really loved the characters and their constant friendly bantering. Earl is quite the funny & talkative Vampire while Duke is more serious and quiet. If this book became a movie or show, I would definitely watch it. Its a quick read/listen and entertaining. I recommend it!
