Meh, this book was so-so.

Some parts of it were interesting, and some just dragged on and on. I liked the way it was structured with storylines in both the past and the present, and I liked the elements of magic (obviously) that the story surrounded. However, I grew tired of Elizabeth constantly having to look over her shoulder for Gideon. It made me wonder why she put up with him for centuries, rather than just finding a solution for the matter sooner? I admit to skimming some of the latter parts of the book, because it wasn't all that interesting, and I was annoyed with the Elizabeth/Gideon thing.

All in all, an okay read - but not one I'll be recommending to others.

There’s very little story here, and what little story there was hinged on the main character never learning from her mistakes while at the same time questioning whether she had learned from her mistakes or not. It became very tedious; by the last several hours of the audiobook it was all I could do to keep listening just to finish the thing.

It was slow at first...

But got a bit better at the end. I'm more interested in Tegan than Bess now. I hope the next book is better.

I will be the first to admit I read this book because I saw the shoes on the cover and was like...omg I want those, but I was very surprised it turned out to be a decent read! Fantastic story telling. Well written and interesting! Not the best in the world but Paula Brackston can sure write well. I plan on reading her other books too.

Nice, easy entertaining read. Enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of the story.

Should come with trigger warnings.
Predictable with a lot of telegraphing to what comes next.
