SYNOPSIS
  • Set in the UK.
  • With fear of nation security and cyber terrorism, people, called Minders, have classified information implanted into their brains.
  • Although it isn’t advertised as a sequel, it is apparently set in same world as Mars’ previous novels, The One & The Passengers.

MY THOUGHTS
  • I had at least read The One, but based on what I have seen others write, I think this likely would have been better if I also read The Passengers first, too.
  • This is the third book I’ve read by Mars, and my first two reads by him were both 4-5 stars each. Unfortunately, this is the weakest one I have read by him so far.
  • The premise was cool, but I didn’t particularly connect with any of the characters. It was an overwhelmingly meh / okay read. Nothing very memorable about it. Ending wasn’t great.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️💫2.5 stars. I have read 2 others by Mars, and I gave those both 4-5 stars. This one was least favorite Mars read for me so far.

This was a fascinating concept. I'm really sad to now read the reviews that say I should've read his other 'future' books first!

Overall, this was some of the best like adult near-future fiction I've read I think. There was enough grounded detail for it to feel believable even though the concept is so wild.

I also found it easy to keep track of lots of characters, which is a testament to the book bc I often struggle with that!

It lost half a star because I felt like the end came tumbling all at once. The story was driving along and then suddenly there was a crescendo and it was done. I would've liked the pace to pick up a little earlier, as I was starting to get a tiny bit bogged down.

It was very violent, but not unnecessarily so.
