I suppose graphic novels are not really my thing, because I was confused basically all the time here. I really liked Dark One: Forgotten, and I was very excited to finally read the original story. But, well, it made no sense to me. This idea of someone being destined to be "the Dark One" and never even asking "why would anyone want to be 'dark'?" didn't really work for me. Also, the "final twist" makes no sense to me whatsoever, but maybe it might if there's ever a sequel.

I've always been hesitant to read a Brandon Sanderson book because I just have a feeling his stories aren't for me, and I was right. I was bored the whole time reading this, the dialogue was so over done that I was rolling my eyes nearly every page, and I didn't care for any characters.

The only reason I didn't DNF is because it's a graphic novel and a quick read.

This had an interesting premise in which we follow the "Dark One" instead of the pre-destined hero in a prophecy. That said, there is plenty of grey area in terms of morality on both sides of the war. There is also a side plot in which the main character's mother, a lawyer, must defend a serial killer client, who seeks the death penalty. I thought this plot was just as interesting as the main plot, if not more so. Both plots end with solid cliffhangers, and I'm eager to see where the story goes next.

Onto a couple problems. While I thought the character development moved a little too quickly (the main character must become the Dark One within relatively few pages) I've found that this is fairly common for graphic novels, so it didn't bother me too much. The art style was usually interesting, but had a few noticeably awkward frames. In particular, the sister character often makes goofy expressions that don't match the tone of what she's saying, or of what's happening around her. She feels cartoonish, and it doesn't seem like an intentional choice (and even if it was, I wouldn't like it).
