Didn't like the first portion of the book, thought about dropping it, and ended up giving it another go due to a friend's recommendation. Glad I decided to stick it out. Really enjoyed watching the characters interact with and tear each other to pieces over the course of the story. Kingmaker Jude my beloved.

You need quite a few chapters to get into it (the narrator is quite immature) but once the plot is unfolding you ll get hooked. Idk why exactly but I feel like the vibes are similar to the ones of Percy Jackson if you ve read that as a teen.

This one I definitely picked up because I see it all over bookstagram. This is the first fae fantasy I’ve ever read and I definitely enjoyed this book way more than I expected I would. Jude is up there with female protagonists who scare me (read: Juliette Cai) 😂 but I love her ambition! Perhaps this is an effect of being YA but I liked that the story flow wasn’t bogged down by heavy world-building (starting new fantasy series is daunting for me 😭) I think it gave good room for the character construction and political intrigue.

As for the love story:
  • Cardan’s just a really mean bully for half the book 😭😭
  • That scene™️ though 😳
  • While I liked that any semblance of a love-triangle (btw. Cardan-Jude-Locke) was a fake-out—Locke needs to 🛑 and Taryn needs to 🏃🏻‍♀️

This is the first book I've read with faerie in it and I really liked it. I loved how fantastical it was and all the woodland vibes. I felt like I was in fairytale. I thought the court/royalty was really interesting, although I did find it confusing at times.
Spoiler Not gonna lie though when almost everyone in the royal family was killed, it was a little easier to understand lol. Also, I knew this had enemies to lovers going into it, but it was so much better than I thought! It hasn't happened yet, but I know Jude and Cardan are going to end up together, but I was still worried when Jude and Locke became a thing. But yeah, basically they still hate each other, but tolerate the other's presence. It seems like the plot is set up to be kind of straightforward, so I'm hoping there are some twists and turns and hopefully the second book doesn't disappoint.
Oh also one more thing, this book isn't illustrated by any means, but there are a few illustrations here and there and they are like my favorite thing ever, they just really add to the aesthetic that this book gives off. The first one is the map (which I did end up referencing quite often). I love the art style and it fits perfectly with what I imagined a fairytale and elfhame feel like. There's also illustrations around the book one/book two titles and the chapter headings. They are in the same style as the map and I think they just do a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the world of faerie. There's also what looks like a mix between a knife and a mushroom, scattered throughout each chapter which just adds to the fairytale vibe of the book.
Spoiler And lastly, probably my favorite illustration of them all, (it's sort of a continuation of the book one/book two illustrations) is just a drawing of some of the seeds of a dandelion blowing in the wind. It's on the very last page and I feel like it just really captures what it feels like to finish a good book.
Anyways, this is my favorite quote:

“Have I told you how hideous you look tonight?” Cardan asks, leaning back in the elaborately carved chair, the warmth of his words turning the question into something like a compliment.
“No” I say, glad to be annoyed back into the present. “Tell me.”
"I can't.”
