I totally fell in love with the first book of the series but found the sequel to be a disappointment. I spent the whole first book getting attached to these wonderful characters and the relationships that formed to then have all four of the couples we read about be totally nonexistent in the sequel. After finishing the book, I can see why the author picked some of the routes for the characters, particularly Sam and Beatrice. However, it was hard for me to get past the fact that the relationships in book 1 served zero purpose in book 2. There was also not enough Jeff and Connor and that just made me sad.

I read this as a palate-cleanser between some heavier books, and, for that purpose, it was great. Sure, there were plot points that could have been resolved more quickly with simple conversations, and the drama is at more of a soap-opera level than a normal-life level, but I thought it was a fun read. That said, for a relatively breezy book, as far as I can tell, McGee thoroughly researched royal life and history. I enjoyed the world-building aspects and learning about the alternate history of the America that chose a monarchy.

UPDATE: A 3rd book has been announced! Hoping there are better things in store for these characters.

I was expecting to love Majesty as much as American Royals, however it felt very different. Some of the characters personalities changed drastically for seemingly no reason and the supporting characters stayed two-dimensional when there was definitely room for growth. A sophomore slump for me, unfortunately.
This also didn’t feel like the final book in the series. There are too many loose ends.
That being said I would still read a third book were she to ever write one. I love the four main characters (we all love to hate a certain character) and would love to see how their stories develop.

i definitely liked the sequel better than the first one, and my love for each of these characters is infinite!! i was actually kicking screaming smiling at sam + marshall at the end and absolutely loved the way everything came to a head in the end! the fourth book came out today so im gonna try to speed through the prequel and start the third book ASAP

Okay first I want to say when I read book one, American Royals, I was blindsided by how the author chose to lead the story and it was just not my cup of tea. Now I only read the sequel (this book) to see if it was redeemed at all. And tbh i got so annoyed reading I had to take so many breaks and read something else. The storyline/plot idea the author had for this series was amazing but I just feel like the execution wasn’t there for me personally. None of the characters (besides maybe two) are likable. No one knows how to communicate and it was just very annoying to me throughout. However, and i know this is an unpopular opinion, I liked how the author chose to end this book. To me it made the most sense and it makes me want to read the 3rd one (although I will not be getting my hopes up. Im sure book three will have an entirely different story since that seems to be a theme). Overall to me it’s a 3 star bc of the ending but other than that I really hate series where the first book is a waste of time and the rest of the series is just overriding what the first books accomplish.

Solid 3.5 for me! I liked this better than the first—I don’t know what it is, the premise is just so fun to me haha.
