"Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda's motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before - when Will's father was imprisoned for murder - this was his home. . . .
Flash back nearly forty years. In the summer Will Trent was born, Amanda Wagner is going to college, making Sunday dinners for her father, taking her first steps in the boys' club that is the Atlanta Police Department. One of her first cases is to investigate a brutal crime in one of the city's worst neighborhoods. Amanda and her partner, Evelyn, are the only ones who seem to care if an arrest is ever made.
Now the case that launched Amanda's career has suddenly come back to life, intertwined with the long-held mystery of Will's birth and parentage. And these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed." (From Amazon)

This is the novel Slaughter fans have been waiting for since we met Will and Amanda. We go back to the 1970s and see how Amanda becomes the woman she is today and her relationship with Will. Will continues to struggle with Angie's hold on him. I was gripped by this novel from cover to cover.

I had no idea this was the sixth in a series! Dang it.. it read like a standalone.

This was an excellent book. It took me a bit to get into it, but once I got my teeth into it, I couldn't put this book down ;)

This was my first book by international bestseller Karin Slaughter and the book’s description grabbed me right away. It has crime spanning 20 years, a mysterious connection between the two main characters and a dash of a love story thrown in. While the book was a good read and I recommend it, it wasn’t the masterpiece it has been called by other reviewers.

3.5 stars. this wasn’t my favorite. honestly i’m just not a fan of duel timelines, and i think that’s why i didn’t love this installment. obviously it’s karin slaughter so the writing and plot was great, but i just didn’t really care about amanda’s timeline in the 70s. it obviously was important, i just didn’t find this plot as compelling as other books in the series.

The disappearance and brutal murder of a young college student raises specters from the past for both Will Trent and his boss, GBI deputy director Amanda Wagner. For Amanda, the case evokes memories of the investigation that launched her career 40 years before while for Will, it prompts troubling questions regarding the death of his mother, which may provide important clues to the identity of a deranged killer.

An absolutely spellbinding read.

The mystery provides an excellent backdrop for the insights into the beginning of Amanda's career as a law enforcement officer as well as the revelations concerning her relationship with Will.

The descriptions of the rampant misogynism and racism in the 1970s are both heartbreaking and infuriating, and go a long way toward explaining Amanda's personality. They are all the more troubling considering the current political and social climate in the USA and elsewhere today.

The transitions between the chapters set in the past and those set in the present are seamless, and the manner in which Slaughter has skillfully interwoven the lives of the various female characters mentioned throughout the series within the fabric of Will's life is particularly satisfying.

There are also some minor developments in Will and Sara's relationship, and it is clear that there are still obstacles for them to overcome if they are to have a future together.

In sum, a brilliant addition to the series and I can't wait for the next one.
