A decent overview of the psychology of different types of killers. Great for lovers of the podcast!

Applies Audio edition only.
There was an excessive part taken up by the interviews they went on for too long, plus two long interviews are just excessive.

Narrators' Rating: 5.0 stars
Since they are podcasters they made excellent narrators of their nonfiction book! I did have to slow the book down from my normal nonfiction speed since I'm used to their speech at 1x speed, I listened at 1.75x speed.

Lets get my only complaint out of the way shall we?

"Paul would drive from Toronto to Ontario every weekend to be with Karla" Chapter 6, page 154

Now how exactly does one drive from a city to a province that aforementioned city already resides within? A baffling sentence to any canadian reader indeed.

This book was excellent, from the pacing to how the information was sectioned out and presented. The case details, although at times infuriating (looking at you Karla), was thorough but not obscenely graphic or glorifying. I really appreciate them touching upon the publics obsession with serials killers- and exploration of why some are obsessed over while others are unheard of. And of course discussing the communities that are targeted and are more likely to be completely ignored or even walked back to the serial killers lair by police. Not always fun but still very well done.

An insightful look into what makes a killer tick.

Redhanded covers a handful of cases under eight different chapters and themes; Genetics, Childhood and Adolescence, Insanity, Misogyny, Cults, Relationships, Bigotry, and Sex. It has to be said, some chapters were better than others. Although the authors, Bala and Maguire researched the subjects well, there were some areas that they could have gone more in-depth in or left out completely. For example, they could have gone more in-depth in the chapter on misogyny, this would have been the perfect place to discuss societal misogyny, misogyny from those in power, and how this influences and creates the illusion that it is okay for someone to act out in violence against women and girls; it felt like they missed an important part out and just used this chapter for some inappropriate jokes that did not read well.

Furthermore, in the chapter genetics, their argument on diagnosing children as psychopaths and with anti-social personality disorder did not bode well; it can be dangerous to start labelling children with these. Yes, it is important to identify potential perpetrators of violent crimes early, but that does not mean we should label children. It would be better if the authors advocated for the education and rehabilitation of children and young people that may show signs of ASPD or psychopathy. It would have been better if the authors had gotten a professional psychologist or psychiatrist to have given their insight for this chapter.

That being said, the chapters on cults, relationships, and sex were my three favourite chapters. I enjoyed that Bala and Maguire used real-life cases and apply it to the themes of the chapters. It also showed that the authors researched these topics well and knew when and where details of crimes were appropriate without over-sensualizing those horrific crimes. However, there were times when the authors would make jokes that didn't always land well on the page.

Redhanded is a great read for someone interested in true crime. However, if you are interested in the psychology behind the mind of a killer, I would recommend reading books or papers released by experienced forensic psychologists or psychiatrists. Although I thought this book could have delved more into the role society has in influencing killers and could have had a few more case studies, Redhanded was addictive and hard to put down.

As an avid RedHanded listener (I subscribe to their Patreon and even bought the signed copy of this book), I absolutely loved this book. This was informative and entertaining with sidebars to keep me engaged and to keep the book from dragging. I loved the use of subheadings (or parts) throughout each chapted, this made it easy to read and keep track of throughout the day since I hate having to stop mid-chapter.

The only "downside" I would say is that this book is really tailored to existing RedHanded audiences - It's full of references and inside jokes that only existing listeners would know. While a good marketing scheme, could hinder their growth with a new audience and stop new readers from completely loving this book.

This was an absolute sensation to read. I loved every page and word. It sticks the true spirit of the podcast which I listen to near enough every day and Hannah and Suruthi have absolutely smashed the whole author thing! If you are a true crime fanatic you will love this quick but deep dive into the world of serial killers and more.
