I love Jemisin as an author. Incredible world building with so much heart. Every culture feels realistic, never exaggerated. Shines in comparison to white authors who've never left their country trying to make non-european worlds.

The story itself, one of her most straightforward. It's pretty good, but not a twisting mystery like others. Excited to read the second book.

Jemisin really throws you in the deep end at the start. Takes a while to really understand whats going on and figure out the characters/world, but once you do it is a gut wrenching story from start to finish

Started off slow but really gripping and beautiful by the end, well worth it. I've loved everything I've read by N.K. Jemisin so far. Read for magic, dreams, honor, love, intimacy, family, adventure, battles.

Very unique high fantasy that had some fantastic world building. Would just liked to have a bit more character work. But still a great book.

Okay, so, up front... I desperately wanted to give this a four. However, it took about 150 pages for me to really feel like I was enjoying myself. Admittedly, that's evidently down to the detail and set up for the world in which the story is situated within.

Regardless, by the end of it, I certainly enjoyed it without a doubt! A little rough around the edges, but Jemisin's huge talent is still perfectly visible throughout.

3.5, a 4 if it weren't for me being so finicky!!
