Grade: B+

This is a two-hand book.  On one hand, it is a fun mystery with well-drawn characters and countless twists.  On the other hand, it is littered with racist and anti-Semitic comments.  If you can deal with the "of its time" quality of this book, it could be worthwhile.  But, if you are troubled by these comments, you may want to search out the newest digital edition for the "sensitized" version.

This was not one of my favorite Poirot mysteries. I had a difficult time getting into it, and it felt like finishing was a slog.

So I enjoyed Peril At End House so much that I went straight on to the next book in the series, Lord Edgware Dies, and it was a good, enjoyable story. It didn’t shock me as much as Peril At End House, however I was still hooked by the story.

We start the book with actress Jane Wilkinson approaching Poirot and imploring him to speak to her husband, Lord Edgware, who is refusing to divorce her. The next morning Lord Edgware is found murdered and witnesses tell Poirot that Jane Wilkinson was the last person to see him alive.

However, Jane was at a dinner party at the time of the murder with twelve other guests who will all testify to her being there. How could she be in two places at once? When two subsequent murders are committed, including that of famous impersonator Carlotta Adams, Poirot finds himself in the middle of one his most intriguing cases yet.

If you have read any of Agatha Christie’s books, you will enjoy Lord Edgware Dies. It is an easy read and will have you gripped from beginning to end.
