I've been kinda slow to jump on the Captain America fan club train. Probably because he comes across as so sugary sweet that it hurts my teeth. But then, I usually cheer for the bad guys so what do I know?
My friend Jeff had told me that I should read Brubaker's version. I figured if anyone could make me like this character..Brubaker was it. He is one of my comic authors I actually don't one star.

This one isn't bad. It starts off with Red Skull plotting dastardly deeds but that stops in its tracks. This book is actually really well done but there were times I got bored in it. Yes, I expect to be entertained. A graphic novel/comic book only has a short time to catch attention because I read them fast..and I want them to do it.

I don't want to tell much about the plot of this one because it could easily go into spoiler territory. So if you are interested in old Sugar Boy Captain pick it up. He didn't make me want to punch him.

I've featured Jeff's reviews before here and he technically read a different version of this one that I did so I'm going with Kemper on this one. If you are not following or friends with Kemper..just go do it right now. He and Dan (the original) were two of the first reviewers that made me realize "Hey, reviewer's are cool!"..not that I'm ever going to get near as cool as these two guys.

I have never been a huge Captain America fan. I never disliked him but I found him to be somewhat overly iconic and almost borderline extreme with the spoon-fed imagery. I enjoyed this book but I was greatly take aback by the art for the Jack Monroe flashback story. For a first volume, the book begins to tell a story but takes so long and has so much dialogue that I feel that it lost a lot of momentum. I might continue this run to finally see some Bucky vs. Cap action.

MY PAL, MY BUDDY, MY BUCKY.

If you know me well, then you know I’m a wee bit obsessed with Bucky Barnes. I’ve watched all of the Captain America films (Civil War, three times), I have a Bucky Barnes funko pop, and a Bucky Barnes Tsum Tsum who I cuddle with every night. (But shush, that’s a secret.)

If you are also obsessed with Bucky Barnes or interested in becoming obsessed with Bucky Barnes, then I recommend you pick up this graphic novel. It has a classic vibe to it, yet it shares some individuality compared to other graphic novels by putting someone like James (aka Bucky) in the spotlight. And I don’t want to give things away, but Brubaker may have brought a little bit of #WinterWidow into this. JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE.

Such a great start to this arc. The art is amazing and you can really feel the emotions in this one. This is a must read for any Cap fan or Marvel fan.

A bit of a reframing of the origin of Bucky Barnes, but not a reprint. Actually it was pretty good. Good writing, good enough art. And done as a set of shorter pieces it gave a much better feel for Bucky as a person. Though it does nothing to explain why Captain America might have needed a young sidekick. Better use of the early Invaders superhero characters than normal, especially the interactions between Bucky and Namor and the adventure with Bucky and Toro. And the bit with Black Widow was good, fun to see a younger Black Widow. All in all a surprisingly good book.
