The premise of the book I think is super important. It gives a great view of what it’s like to be in an abusive relationship. And the slow building of the abuse and the denial are well written.

But Amber as a character and the writing style just really put me off.

I get it, Amber is 20 when all this starts and is super naive. But even 10 years later as she’s recounting the story, she still seems incredibly juvenile. And the way she speaks seems to reflect that too. It’s also hard to not see her as shallow as more often than not she’s spending most of the time talking about the luxuries in life like flying first class or the expensive alcohol they drink.

I also has some issues with the way speech was written in general. Almost no one used contractions. It just felt... weird and unrealistic.

I think this is a good hard hitting piece, but I just couldn’t connect to the character or story because so much time is spent describing trivial details.
