I should have learned long ago that Jack Ketchum just isn't my cup of tea.

Everything about this fell a bit flat for me. No character depth, weak plot line, no back story to our villains. Just some horny folks in a cabin in the woods, and a disgruntled police officer who should have retired ages ago.

Wad it gory? Yes. Was it beyond brutal? Also yes. However it felt that the attempts at shocking the reader with violence far outweighed any attempt at building a storyline worth following. More attention was put into the spice level than the actual plot line and that just isn't my thing.

If you're into brutal gore stories with nonplots, this is for you.

Eh, it was okay. Very fast paced. Sometimes it was just painfully written by a man. Like when your rental house is being surrounded by a unfathomable amount of cannibals trying to break in and tear you apart you totally stop to notice and admire a hysterical woman's naked body that you're trying to get dressed, as a woman, right? Right? LOL

Overall it was fine. The writing was fine. The story, fine. And gruesome and not a very happy ending. I kinda nothing this book tbh.

3.75 stars. Off Season was dark, visceral and unsettling. The clan of bloodthirsty barbarians were the perfect cast of antagonists and I really enjoyed how ruthless they were. Emotions didn't affect them and they weren't motivated or influenced by anything other than their own hunger for flesh. This book played really well into my fear of home intrusion, if you're looking for a book that falls under this trope, this would be the perfect read for you. The ending took me by surprise but upon reading the afterword by the author himself, I understood and appreciated the ending we were given.

BLAND. SOOOOOO BLAND. I'll say that this one was actually the weakest novel I have read which features cannibals. And I say features because half of the book doesn't even focus on the cannibals. The first and the second sections of the novel tell us about the life and struggles our characters (who are going to be butchered) have to face in the world. How they think that the person they are dating is not better than the previous person they dated. I DIDN'T LIKE THAT!!!! WHY SHOULD WE KNOW THIS STUFF IF THESE PEOPLE ARE ABOUT TO BE KILLED IN THE NEXT FEW CHAPTERS????

I am not saying that this is a bad book. It's a good book. But why the unnecessary character development? And what was the purpose of introducing cops in the story? They have no roles in this novel until 90% mark. And that too was kind of unnecessary. Still the parts which DID focus on the cannibals were great. Perfect actually. Which is why I said it's a good book . I hope the next book in the series is better. 3.5 Body fluid lathered stars 🌟🌟🌟✨
