Cute coming of age, American pioneer family story, like a slightly more grown-up Little House. However, huge trigger warning for stereotypes of native Americans and white savior plot points. And despite Caddie be a strong young female main character, traditional gender roles are upheld in many ways typical of the time period.

Newberry award winner.
Western Wisconsin pioneer family during the civil war. Lovable like the Ingalls with a larger family and a bit  more money. Explores school and home life in the 1860s and the gender expectations of the time. Glad to see the family is anti-slavery and has good relationships with their Native American neighbors, though not everyone does
