This was a classic I missed growing up, but being a big musical fan, I wanted to read the orginal before exploring the new Outsiders musical. The story follows Ponyboy as he and his brothers and friends, who are all "Greasers" struggle to get by while being harassed and attacked by the wealthier "Socs." After meeting a soc girl names Cherry, and realizing she has a lot in common with him, Ponyboy and his friend Johnny are attacked by Cherry's boyfriend Bob and his friends. After Johnny stabs and kills Bob in self defense, the greasers find themselves involved in gang warefare, while Johnny and Ponyboy have to figure out their next moves. It's not an easy read, but I can see why it's a classic. Ponyboy is a bit angsty for my adult brain, but I could see teenage me sympathizing deeply with him and his gang.

From the jump this book gave me West Side Story vibes!
It seems as if everyone I know read the book in high school (my brother did which is why I have it) but the curriculum switched before I got to read it.
I COMPLETELY understand why this book is considered a classic because it’s timeless. Unfortunately in our society, there will always be “haves” and “have-nots”. Also, I think it adds to the appeal that the author was the same age as the characters when she wrote the book because who understands kids/teens more than each other?!
It really was a great read and I’m glad I dove into it.

It took forever for me to get into the story, I wasn’t really invested in it until probably there were probably 30 pages left. The ending made sense, was good,
sad, reflective, and did a good job of giving a realistic portrayal of grief.
would I read again? Probably not, but the voice felt like a 14 year old intelligent boy and I appreciated that.
