I loved that this is not typical romance yet still has a happy ending. Georgina is one of the strongest female characters I have ever read about and I loved her. Plus Lucasā€™ declaration of love is EVERYTHING!Ā

If the public declarations of love in romantic comedies make you cringe, then this is the book for you! I honestly think the cartoonish cover does a disservice to the weighty subjects this book explores (grief, sexual assault, abusive romantic relationships). But then again the main character in this story consistently struggles to be taken seriously despite her fluffy outward appearance (her trademark is a pink faux fur coat). The writing is so incredibly charming and the audiobook really took the reading experience to the next level. This was my first Mhairi McFarlane book and it certainly wonā€™t be my last. I already have another queued up!

Oh my. I have so many thoughts on this one. I listened to the audiobook and I think thatā€™s the only reason i finished it - i zoned out for several hours and didnā€™t miss much.Ā

First of all - this is not a romance novel. There isnā€™t even an iota of romantic plot until 85% of the way through the book. Even then, itā€™s hardly a plot.Ā

Secondly, the first 85% of the book is just a bunch of pointless filler that doesnā€™t really advance the story. There all so many side characters that it gets confusing. I kept getting confused about who was Georginaā€™s family or her friends and honestly, it didnā€™t even make a bloody difference because they were so insignificant. The storyline with Robin made no sense - heā€™s super aloof one minute and then the next heā€™s trying to win Georgina back?? There was so consistent characterization and his motivation didnā€™t make sense.Ā

There are also all these side plots -
Georginaā€™s mum and her abusive boyfriend, Keith the dog and Lucasā€™ wife
- that go nowhere. They occur, they are sort of resolved and then they have no impact on the central story line or romance.Ā

FINALLY - what the hell was that whole romance?? Why does a 30 year-old grown ass man pretend to not recognize his high school sweetheart?? The whole ā€œforgot who you areā€ plot felt like a gimmick the author used to make the book more interesting.Ā

When we are finally told why Lucas and Georgina are so estranged, itā€™s because Georgina read aloud a story of her sexual assault in front of a room full of strangers. It was bizarre - it made no sense for her character and seemed to come out of nowhere.Ā

1.5 āļø because of the cute tortoise.Ā

Content warnings: sexual harassment/assault, abusive exes and second husbands, mentions of eating disorders and fatphobia/diet culture. Some of it is directly addressed and some is not.Ā

Read until 1AM despite having work the next day-really couldnā€™t put it down. This is a slow burn, circumstantially star-crossed lovers type of romance. The tension between Georgina and Lucas is palpable. Side note: I understood almost none of the British actors, movie or bands mentioned, but that is my uncouth American showing through.Ā

HOWEVER, I struggle with the big reveal (which letā€™s be real we all knew was coming), and the male lead changing his mind because of it. Heā€™s apologetic for sure, and says that he wouldnā€™t have said lots of what he said past and present had he known, but despite these proclamations, there is some part of it that doesnā€™t sit right with me. The conversation in the kitchen addresses a lot of it, but I still feel oddly about it.
