This was a super cute concept, but the characterization was very poor. The idea (saving the whales) was also really good, and when it focused on that it really shone.

Miranda is a mermaid on a mission to infiltrate Justin Lockheed's home to get information to help bring down a huge whaling conglomerate. Justin hates his new assignment, the water and everything about it, but this campaign will make or break his career.

The story is cute, short, and full of plot holes. Big, gaping plot holes. The plan hatched up for Miranda to infiltrate Justin's house must have been a long winded affair taking days, weeks or even months to plan out and arrange among a group of merfolk and humans, but Justin only knew about his assignment that morning. Miranda has no idea how to do be the maid that she is pretending to be and isn't willing to put in the effort to try to learn and Justin is somehow stupid enough to keep her on after the first day? Wouldn't the human side of the anti-whaling group have had someone infinitely more qualified to do this job? And the talking bird--the whole concept of animals all sharing a common understanding of each other's languages (except for humans) is a horrifying one. It really means that all the carnivores and omnivores out there are just monsters, psychopaths who can chat with you one moment and then butcher your family the next.

Anyway, I looked too deep into this story and had too many questions as to the logic of the scenario and little made sense.

For being a romantic comedy, I wasn't that impressed with this book. I didn't find it funny at all, and I thought the romantic leads were somewhat idiotic. The hero's aversion to water was never fully explained, and we never learned what exactly he did for the ad campaign. There was little discussion of feelings, and yet the main characters are suddenly in true love with one another. We don't know for certain at the end of the story if the heroine's transformation to human is completely permanent, or if she is able to transform her legs in the sea at will. Other than this being a short story perfect for summer, I don't see much to recommend it.
