it was a little too close to home and heavy for me personally as reading is my escape and i wasn’t really expecting it BUT it was amazing otherwise i felt like gus and january were with me while i was reading it and their fears were relatable and made me feel a little less alone

I really enjoyed this book. The first book I read by Emily Henry was not as good as this one and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. I could completely relate to the main character because she is also an author struggling with writers block. I liked the fact that she was dealing with some tough situations and how she could grow through it, while also going outside of her comfort zone with Gus. I thought this was a great and well rounded story, but I did think that the main characters could have avoided fights if it weren’t for miscommunication. I also didn’t like that she was a stereotypical woman in a romance book (e.g. over dramatic and cried all the time).

This spoke to me. I read a lot of fantasy and unrealistic fiction. This was refreshing. Grounded in real life emotions and experiences and humour. The final few chapters didn’t deliver as much as I’d hoped but I will be reading this again. Highlighting and annotating the humour and spice and most importantly the emotional and philosophical reflections.

This book was such a beautiful commentary on love, family, grief, loss, and growing into your career. I loved this book. Emily Henry’s insights on personal growth are simply inspiring and had me hooked. I also loved the journey of the writing process and how Janie and Gus’s writing coincided with the plot of the book. The ending was satisfying. 0.5 off for extremely misplaced sex scenes (who has a breakdown and then gets railed?!) and some… interesting… verb choices for touching someone else nicely (really? scraping???) but overall a great novel. Henry should be proud of herself. This is one I would return to again after sitting on it for a little.

I love love loved the lake house setting of this story. While I don’t typically reach for romances, this was a fun read. I appreciated that there were still some stakes and it wasn’t all “fluff”, and that the author tackled some heavier topics. Probably my favorite part of this book was the side-plot relationship between our FMC, January, and her best friend, Shadi. So many scenes between those two are a wonderful ode to best friendship and reminded me very much of relationships in my own life.
