Didn’t grab me as I came back to the series. Loved books 2-4 so much and this one just… didn’t pull me in

Book 4 felt like a filler to me and was too repetitive. Not so with book 5. I think this is the first time an author has increased my rating after the series has started to bore me.
I struggled to get back into it, but I feel that if I read this again it will change to a 5. I think when the next book is out I will reread the whole series to see what I have missed.

I enjoyed the side story between Maleena and the assassin. Kaila I want to kill. The part with Rissa was a bit convenient.
A lot is happening so it will be interesting to see where Raven takes it. At this point, it looks like she will be bait and everyone else will be dead.
I would love to know what Daddy is after lol.

This series is *chefs kiss*.

I LOVED the different points of view and how they gave the characters more emotional depth, Queen Malina in particular. (I would read an entire book from her perspective tbh.)

The King Cull reveal:

Every time Slade exacts vengeance on Auren's behalf:

I can't wait to see what Goldfinch has in store. I desperately need Slade and Auren reunited, and Osrik and Rissa to finally have their moment.

I started this series because I was intrigued by the King Midas’s retelling and I loved the last two books in the series. However, this one got derailed from the original plot.

Spoilers Ahead:
I already knew Auren and Slade are going to be apart in this book but I didn’t expect to happen it for the whole book. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Auren standing on her own but there was NO reason for it to be for an entire book.

I enjoyed unhinged Slade in his revenge ride but at a point where 60% of the book was about avenging her. This book has opened up so many plots that I don’t know how the author is going to sum it up. I understand it suffers from the filler book syndrome but this was way too long than needed.

Also, the romance between the OG couple was non existent in this book whereas, Malina (not sure to hate her or like her) had an insane chemistry with the Assassin.

The ending I think created more problems for the characters than solving them to wrap it up in the next book. In next book Auren won’t remember Slade and the story starts again. I feel like this book dragged a lot and I don’t know if I’m invested enough at this point to continue the series.

I loved this series to start with, but it could have ended two books ago. Most of this book felt like filler, and it was unnecessarily long. Queen Malina was surprisingly the best part of the book. It felt like she was the only one actually doing something and her chapters weren't just rehashing the same things over and over again like the other characters.
