Beautifully and hauntingly written, this book ultimately fails to entice. The first half of the book is rich and disturbing, even with the divorced style the author uses of distancing herself from her past. I was very moved by this section, but the second half changed course so completely and was not nearly as compelling. If this had been a longer memoir, it could have been just a separate chapter in a longer work, but pairing it with the first story made it an anticlimactic addition. I should check out her other works, though, because her voice is entrancing.

The writing stirs me. She has a wonderful sentences construction that allows each moment to flow like the thought it follows. I will read this again I think.

In this memoir, Ernaux seeks to bridge the gap between the girl she was in 1958 and the woman she is now. The girl from 1958 is her muse, and she’s writing her story in order to understand her present.
Some things that happen seem insignifant when they happen, but mean everything in hindsight.
This book inspired me. If you feel there’s a part of you that you can’t forget but have never written about, this book can take that hesitation out of you.

Raw, unflinching, coming-of-age memoir that confronts the gulf between who you once were and what life has towed you into now.
