Poor Owl, tortured by that stupid mouse.

Sweetly absurd and sure to be a hit with families looking for a bedtime story that's a bit different. As with many of Pizzoli's books, it's a good picture book option for beginning readers as well. It went a bit off the rails for me, but I'm sure that reading it aloud to a child would bring out the joy in it. And his illustrations are colorful, fun, and a pleasure to pour over, as always.

Wow, this really hit home in a slightly uncomfortable way.

Owl spends the whole night trying to go to bed, but he just can’t until he can find the source of the mysterious noise: “squeek!” Every time he hears it, Owl’s attempt to find it becomes more drastic and more ridiculous. He is convinced it’s the door; he goes to check. He is convinced it is under the floor; he tears up the floorboards. He is convinced it is in the walls; he tears his house down. Finally, in a pile of his completely destroyed house, Owl sees the noise. He says goodnight to the noise and is able to go to sleep in peace.

It reminded me what lengths I have gone to feverishly discover the source of something that’s spiking my anxiety. How often have I lain in bed, convinced I won’t be able to fall asleep because the heater is just a little too loud? It reminded me too well of those young days when my anxiety went unchecked and caused me to do some very counterintuitive things almost as drastic as Owl tearing his house down while trying to find the source of a noise. I really connected with Owl because, whether intentionally or by complete accident, this felt like it was representation on what it feels like to have mild-to-moderate OCD.

Love this! Readers will enjoy finding the squeaky little mouse on every page and find humor in Owl's determination to find the source of each meddlesome squeak!

Good Night Owl follows Mr. Owl as he tries to find out the source of a squeaking sound (which turns out to be a mouse). Mr. Owl tears apart his home from top to bottom before discovering the mouse. But all is well as Mr. Owl and the mouse become friends. This is a gentle and fun read.

This was cute. I liked the art style. But the ending fell flat for me. Not that there has to be a message or a moral, but I couldn't figure out the point of the story.
Owl destroys his house and then goes to sleep with the mouse, but why? Did he know the mouse? Why does the mouse keep squeaking and then hiding instead of revealing himself/herself to Owl?
I just didn't feel any resolution and it didn't have that charm of silliness for silliness' sake, which I love in other picture books. Pretty, but a bit of a let down story-wise for me.
