I almost feel embarrassed trying to write a review for this, because Angela Carter's use of the English language goes so far beyond my own capabilities. Every word choice was so painstakingly precise, intentional...there is magic inherent in her careful sentence construction. These stories aren't feminist in the sense that they espouse "girl power", but there is heavy critique regarding objectification, what we consider acceptable behavior for women, reclaiming sexual freedom, and how even fellow women can partipicate in misogyny. I am not smart enough to decipher all that on my own, haha! I dissected the text as best as I could, then looked up how other people analyzed it. A lot of things certainly went over my head, but it was a fun challenge!

I read this very slowly - over the course of 2 months. I bet it would be fun to discuss in a class, too. My favorites were The Tiger's Bride and Erl-King. :)

This collection was gifted to me, and I admit I know nothing about author Angela Carter. The writing itself is stunning, if a little verbose at times. The stories live well together, all gothic fantasy with familiar fairytale themes. While many didn’t grab me, I did love The Courtship of Mr. Lyon; The Lady of the House of Love; and The Werewolf. All in all an atmospheric collection that brings back the original darkness of fairytales.
