3.5 stars // This short book was inspired by the life and work of painter Joan Mitchell. Not biographical in the true sense, it often enters the realm of historical fiction. (To Lippincott's credit, references are cited at the end.) My favorite entries were "The Obstacle Race" and "Monarchs".

It is worth noting that there are no photographs of Mitchell's work within these pages. I found [b:The Paintings of Joan Mitchell|262885|The Paintings of Joan Mitchell|Jane Livingston|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1389072409s/262885.jpg|254824] to be a worthwhile companion in light of this.

Robin Lippincott, more than any other single person, has taught me what it means to be a writer.
