الرواية تدور فى وقت مثير للإهتمام ، فلم يمر على قيام ثورة يوليو غير مدة زمنية قصيرة .
أوجه الشبه بين الشخصيات كتيرة ووممكن تتقارن فيما بينها خصوصا بين الجيلين ف سرحان البحيرى ما هو الا طلبة مرزوق فى ظروف أخرى ، ومع أن البحيرى يعتبر من أبناء الثورة إلا ان إيمانه بها زائف ، وعلى عكس ما يتصوره المعاديين لها - كـ طلبة - فهو على أتم الاستعداد للتعامل والاستثمار معهم فى ما نهبوه من الشعب ، فى قول آخر هو فقط يكره طبقتهم كما قال .
وكذلك حسنى علام وعامر وجدى فهم أقل مبالاة بالثورة ونتائجها مع تأييدهم لها ، والاثنان يكتفيان باللهو فقط دون الزواج مع تيسير ذلك لهما ويفترقان فى كون أحدهم كان ذا عمل والآخر ذا ثروة ، والمثير هو كيفية معالجتهم لتأنيب ضميرهم فالسيد وجدى أصبح ملازما للقرآن ككثير ممن يكبرون في السن ويرجون أن يجدوا ايمانهم ، وهو بلا شك كان قوله فى شبابه -كـ علام وكـ كثير من الشباب - "فريكيكو .. لا تلمنى" .
التنقل ما بين الماضى والحاضر كان جيداً ، وفى حالة منصور باهى كان رهيباً خصوصا عند مقابلته لـ البحيرى والتقل ما بين هو واقع وما هو تصور . والعجيب أنه عمليا أكثر شخص يقف ضد الثورة ولولا أخوه لكان فى السجن .
الخلاصة لا يوجد محب حقيقى للثورة ومؤمن بها .. واختيار محفوظ للوقت التى تجرى الرواية فيه كان ذكيا ومناسبا أكثر للتعبير عن آراؤه .

لأني بقرأ أعمال محفوظ بترتيب إصدارها, مفيش عمل بيعدي إلا أما بيربط قلبي أكتر بالأعمال إلي سبقتوا وبيشوقني أكتر للأعمال إلي هتيجي بعدوا,, وبالرغم إن محفوظ رفض فكرة إن كان عندوا مشروع أدبي رفض تام في أكتر من حوار,, إلا أني دايما بحس أما ببدأ أقرأ عمل جديد ليه,, إن العالم الجديد ده, هو هو العالم إلي مشي فيه الحج أحمد عبد الجواد, وعاشت فيه حميده,, وغيرهم من أبطال محفوظ العظام,, ممكن يكون رفض محفوظ لأنوا مكنش حاطط دا في دماغة قبل ما يكتب, أو لإستخدامه أساليب مختلفه في الرواية,, أو غيروا,, بس محفوظ صنع قصر روائي كبير جدا ومتشابك جدا وممتع جدا,, و ميرمار بالنسبة ليا هي الجنينة بتاع القصر دا,, أو جزء منها,, الله أعلم❤️0

Miramar is essentially a soap opera, as the publisher's copy promises. Yet I hate to describe it as such because it's really not trashy at all. Told from four separate perspectives (Hosny, Mansour, Sarhan, and Amer), it is instead a slice of life in a breezy city by the Mediterranean in the aftermath of great social upheaval. While the old folks seek company and security at the end of their lives, the young people (all under thirty) rush from here to there with seemingly no purpose. Amer can only recall the conviction of his youth while his successor, Mansour, falls just as hard and quickly as Sarhan the ostensible socialist. Hosny, alas, is the one left standing and he is by far the least sympathetic. A free-spending, speed-driving aristocrat with a penchant for prostitutes, Hosny is apparently the only one able to adapt to the new climate, thanks to his interest in purchasing a business from an owner nervous about the government's property seizures. The only characters with any real principles are Amer and Zora. Elderly Amer, however, is largely irrelevant, while Zora is strictly pragmatic (she wants to learn to read and find better work) and also powerless due to her gender, illiteracy, and lack of family ties.

“ Ah, you remember! And my self comes back to me.”
Told by multiple narrators in Rashomon style, Miramar is a story of residents of a pension, its owner Mariana and her servant Zohra. Zohra is beautiful and all the three young men are attracted to her, and so there are fights and it all ends with a murder.
That all sounds cliché – right? And even characters aren’t necessarily too complex and there are a lot of things left unexplained especially in the first chapter but the story is also a very loose allegory of an Egyptian revolution and there is a lot of symbolism, particularly in the first chapter and even the interactions are very symbolic.
It is based in a time just after the revolution. If you don’t know what revolution I’m talking about, then it is okay, you don’t need to know much. It was one of those revolutions that failed by getting the wrong kind of success and ended up what all such revolutions do – it took power from old elite and distributed it among new opportunists.
There are representatives of both old and new generations – but there are no idealists in the new generation. Leave alone the wealthy and the opportunist with their obvious faults, even the intellectuals of the new generation are shown as weak and lacking will power. Although Mahfouz has a compassionate view of them all.
Author’s thoughts are represented in the old idealist journalist Amer Wagdi, the narrator of both the first and last generation – and the only man in the whole novel who has only platonic feelings for Zohra – Zohra, probably being a symbol for Egypt itself. The complete failure of the new generation may sound depressing. In the novel, it meant a lot of suffering for Zohra, who is desired by all but no one worthy of her wants to be responsible for her. Yet she is still confident at the end. Amer is hopeful about her having a bright future and his words to Zohra at the end of the novel give an optimistic spin to the failure of the revolution:
“If you've come to know what is not good for you, you may also think of it all as having been a sort of magical way of finding out what is truly good for you.”
