A huge disappointed but still better than some other books I've read in 2023. Could be better if I would have read it younger. It git me spooked out at some point, and would be great for a chilly autumn evening. But the writing could have been better. Now it was just boring and a bit annoying not mentioning it  took me out of reading flow.

I was a little disappointed with this book, I felt it could have been a little longer, with more explanation at the end. Having said that it did play on my mind after.

Ein schöner Klassiker der Geisterliteratur, der zwar das Genre nicht revolutioniert, aber trotzdem alles richtig macht. Das geht von der Stimmung, über die Figuren, bis hin zur Erklärung. Die Geschichte lässt sich flüssig und somit sehr zügig lesen, aber nur weil man es kann, heisst das nicht, dass man es auch tun muss. Man kann sich auch Zeit lassen und so richtig ins Buch eintauchen und mal kurz alles andere vergessen. Ein bisschen auf Geisterjagd gehen, sich ein wenig schaudern. Dann wieder auftauchen, realisieren, wo man sich befindet, und sich dann auf die nächste Lesestunde freuen. Vor allem im Herbst die passende Lektüre.

An engaging, creepy read that really helped me set a tone for this year's spooky season! It maintains a sort of low level, constant eeriness without ever going over the top, but also without ever spiraling downward into dullness. That's a tricky thing to get right and I found the balancing act on display here to be really impressive! A smidge more action might've been an improvement, but it may also have cheapened things? I really came away from this one respecting the author's restraint. And there's no denying that when the story finally does show some teeth it's done so to great effect.

I'm gonna have to dig up the original film adaptation soon! It looks good. Maybe do a double feature with the Daniel Radcliffe version? I remember nothing about that movie other than that I thought it was surprisingly solid.
